Shenzhen is set to open three new metro lines in 2025, further enhancing its extensive urban rail transit system. The lines expected to begin operation this year are the Shenzhen Metro Line 5 Western Extension, Line 16 Phase II, and Line 6 Spur Line Phase II.
By the end of 2024, Shenzhen’s metro network had already reached an operational length of 595.1 kilometers. According to the city’s transportation authorities, 17 projects totaling 250.24 kilometers are currently under construction as part of Shenzhen’s Phase III, Phase IV (including adjustments), and Phase V metro programs. Once these projects are fully completed by 2028, the city's total metro mileage will increase to 831 kilometers.
In addition to metro expansion, Shenzhen is making significant strides in railway infrastructure. By 2030, the city plans to build seven high-speed rail lines, nine intercity rail lines, one freight rail line, five railway connector lines, and four railway hubs, totaling 26 railway projects. Upon completion, Shenzhen’s operational railway service will exceed 1,000 kilometers.
These developments will greatly enhance regional connectivity. The travel time between the core of the Shenzhen’s urban areas and the core cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area will be reduced to 30 minutes, while major cities within the Greater Bay Area will be reachable within one hour.
