Luohu opens new library packed with smart technology

The newly opened 77,000-square-meter Luohu Library is redefining what a modern public library can be, offering visitors an immersive experience powered by cutting-edge technology and thoughtfully designed reading spaces for all ages.
From the moment visitors step into the spacious, light-filled lobby, the library's smart features are immediately apparent. Compared with traditional libraries, the new facility offers fully upgraded intelligent services, including smart borrowing, self-service inquiries and automated systems that make reading more efficient and enjoyable.
Smart technologies throughout the library
Among the most eye-catching innovations is the AI-powered automatic sorting system, which rapidly returns books to their proper locations and keeps circulation running smoothly.
An AI poetry interaction zone allows visitors to engage in virtual poetic exchanges with historical literary figures such as Li Bai and Du Fu, blending classical culture with modern technology.
Borrowing books has also become easier than ever. The library supports mobile QR-code borrowing, enabling readers to check out books instantly through automatic recognition.
Other smart amenities include book-disinfection machines that use 30-second ultraviolet sterilization, ensuring a clean and safe reading environment, and a cultural tourism interactive zone where visitors can explore hand-drawn travel maps and embark on virtual tours with a tap of the screen.
For phone calls, soundproof booths provide a quiet, private space without disturbing others. The library's digital avatar, "Luo Xiaotu," can be activated with a simple voice command and offers assistance with a wide range of inquiries.
Inclusive spaces for all readers
The first floor features a high-ceilinged lobby with a one-stop service desk for borrowing, returns, information inquiries and research assistance. Above the desk, a smart display screen provides real-time updates on services, events and new book recommendations.
To ensure accessibility, the elderly reading room and Braille reading area are both located on the first floor, eliminating the need for stairs or elevators. The elderly area includes adjustable magnifiers, while the Braille section offers audio-reading devices, barrier-free navigation and multifunctional electronic visual aids.
For the youngest visitors aged 0 to 3, the library offers a specially designed early-learning zone with soft mats, safety barriers and low bookshelves, creating a quiet and safe play-and-read environment.
The children's section includes a well-lit homework area with appropriately sized desks and chairs, allowing students to study comfortably.
Teenagers aged 13 to 18 have their own youth section, designed with dynamic lighting, interactive features and age-appropriate collections that create an energetic, immersive reading atmosphere.
A mother-and-baby room on the second floor provides soft lighting, a clean changing table and a comfortable nursing chair, offering a quiet retreat for parents.
Specialized themed libraries
The healthy living section provides resources on scientific exercise, nutrition, mental well-being and traditional wellness practices, along with ample study seating.
The Shenzhen–Hong Kong cultural integration section highlights Hong Kong's society, arts and cultural achievements, as well as materials documenting exchanges between the two cities.
A cultural salon area offers an open space for lectures, book discussions and cultural dialogues. Visitors may apply at the service desk to use the venue.
The library also operates a 24-hour reading room equipped with smart access control. Readers can enter at any time using their library card or ID card.
