Shenzhen's Shuibei reports holiday gold-buying surge

Shenzhen's Shuibei area, known nationwide as a major jewelry trading hub, recorded strong foot traffic and robust sales during the Spring Festival holiday, with gold jewelry emerging as a top choice among shoppers.
From Chinese New Year's Eve to the fourth day of the lunar new year, daily visitor numbers at local shopping malls ranged between 6,000 and 7,000, according to statistics. While just over 40 merchants remained open at the start of the holiday, the number rose to more than 60 by the fifth day of the lunar new year (Feb. 21), as business activity steadily picked up.
Although many retailers increased their inventories ahead of the festival, few expected demand to be so strong. Gold jewelry carrying auspicious meanings proved especially popular. Items such as pony-shaped pendants, "peace" gold locks and gourd-shaped ornaments were among the bestsellers, with some selling out quickly.
A Hong Kong visitor surnamed Chen said she had long been aware of Shuibei's reputation for gold jewelry and decided to visit for the first time during the holiday. She purchased several small gold bead bracelets.
Another tourist, Song from east China's Shandong province, bought both gold and silver accessories. "We had heard about Shuibei before, so we came to see it for ourselves," she said.
Beyond jewelry shopping, Shuibei offers a comprehensive consumer experience. The area is home to more than 3,000 dining outlets and features major shopping complexes such as KKTIME and IBC MALL, along with numerous specialty restaurants. The integration of cuisine, jewelry culture, entertainment and family-friendly activities has made the district a one-stop destination for holiday leisure and shopping.
