Shenzhen's first water treatment plant completes major upgrade

Shenzhen's first water treatment plant has recently completed a major upgrade, bringing cleaner and more reliable tap water to residents in Luohu District.
The Donghu Water Plant, the city's earliest water treatment facility, officially began operation on Wednesday after a four-year expansion and renovation project. Its daily water supply capacity has increased from 350,000 to 600,000 cubic meters, greatly enhancing water security for the district. Once fully operational, the upgraded plant will serve more than one million people, allowing residents to drink water directly from the tap with greater confidence.
The expansion project started in September 2021 with a total investment of about 20.24 billion yuan. During construction, the project team carefully arranged the work in phases to ensure that residents continued to receive stable and uninterrupted water supply. This allowed the old and new systems to switch smoothly, without affecting daily life.
More than a capacity upgrade, the project has transformed Donghu into a modern and smart water plant. Advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, digital management systems, and real-time monitoring are now widely used, enabling over 95% of the plant's operations to run automatically. This has improved both efficiency and safety in water treatment.
Despite limited construction space, the team adopted innovative design solutions to make better use of vertical space and improve treatment efficiency. As a result, the upgraded facilities can process water much faster than traditional systems, while maintaining high quality standards.
The Donghu Water Plant upgrade marks an important step in Shenzhen's move toward smarter urban infrastructure and better public services, reflecting the city's continued efforts to improve everyday life through technology and innovation.
