Luohu's homegrown micro-drama shines at Hong Kong Bauhinia International Film Festival

The Fourth Hong Kong Bauhinia International Film Festival (HKBIFF) has unveiled its latest award nominations, with the Luohu's original micro-drama Special Economic Zone Station shortlisted for best short drama and lead actor Ma Tianwei nominated for best actor.
Produced entirely by a Shenzhen-based creative team, from production and directing to scriptwriting, acting, coordination, and post-production, the series distinguishes itself as a fully local original work. Shenzhen residents were invited to participate in cameo roles, adding authentic community voices and truly realizing the vision of "Shenzhen people telling Shenzhen stories."
Inspired by real cases from more than a dozen community party-mass service centers in Luohu, the drama spotlights grassroots governance and everyday livelihood concerns. Through six vivid portrayals of frontline community workers dedicated to public service, the series uses intimate, small-scale narratives to illuminate broader social change, offering warmth and positive energy.
HKBIFF, officially registered with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, has become a key platform that bridges local creativity with international perspectives. Its professional jury system and inclusive approach to diverse film genres have cemented its influence across the Chinese-language film industry.
As one of China's earliest reform and opening-up districts, Luohu has long invested in community-based cultural creation. It is home to the nation's first short play and sketch creation base, as well as a Guangdong provincial base for mass cultural production. Local artists have repeatedly earned top national honors, including the Qunxing Award and the Cao Yu Drama Literature Award.
In recent years, Luohu has expanded its cultural reach by partnering with leading institutions and developing high-quality performance platforms. Signature events such as the National Folk Arts Showcase and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Shenzhen) Youth Theatre Month have grown into vibrant theatrical festivals. Original works continue to excel: the drama Smoke won the Qunxing Gold Award, while the contemporary dance piece Return received the prestigious Lotus Award.
Together, these achievements are transforming Luohu into a rising hub for theatre and cultural innovation, injecting fresh momentum into grassroots artistic creation.
