Driverless delivery vehicles hit road in Shenzhen’s Luohu District

Shenzhen’s Luohu District has officially rolled out its first fleet of autonomous delivery vehicles, with 13 units now in operation across 10 subdistricts. The vehicles have already logged a total of 67.7 kilometers, marking a significant step forward in smart logistics services for the district.
Developed by JD Logistics, the driverless delivery cars are built for heavy-duty use, with a maximum load capacity of 1,000 kilograms and a single-charge range of 160 kilometers. They support battery swapping and can operate 24/7, covering peak service periods from early morning to late evening to meet real-world delivery demands.
The rollout combines advanced technology with refined operations. Each vehicle is equipped with seven lidars and eleven cameras, creating a full-spectrum sensing network capable of handling complex urban road conditions. In extreme weather, the system automatically follows traffic rules and can safely downgrade to a stop if necessary.
To ensure efficiency and safety, JD Logistics has introduced a rigorous route design process. Technical staff conduct on-site inspections to assess road conditions, while routes are designed to avoid congested and difficult sections. Real-time map updates and road inspections further guarantee reliable service even during construction or disruptions.
By taking over short-distance transfers, the autonomous fleet is helping reduce labor and time costs, providing smoother last-mile logistics and upgrading delivery services in Luohu.
