Luohu’s Yulong landfill remediation project underway

In June last year, environmental remediation began at the Yulong landfill, once Shenzhen’s largest waste site, located in the core area of Qingshuihe Digital New City in Luohu district.
The project calls for the treatment of more than 4.1 million tons of aged waste — enough to fill 1,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools — making it the largest full-scale excavation and relocation remediation project in China to date.
After cleanup and redevelopment, the site will be transformed into a hub for digital innovation, hosting industries such as research and development, pilot testing, and digital services. By the end of this year, construction progress is expected to reach 60%. Full completion is scheduled for late 2026, when about 30 hectares of contiguous land will be ready for release.
The initiative reflects Luohu’s shift from land expansion to unlocking the potential of existing urban resources. By combining high-standard ecological protection with high-quality development, the district is positioning itself as China’s first core urban model that integrates environmental remediation, development, industrial-city synergy, and innovation-driven growth.
