Shenzhen airport starts construction on new terminal and cargo facilities

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport broke ground on Aug. 23 on its Terminal 2 (T2) area and northern cargo and supporting facilities, marking a new phase in the airport's expansion. The projects will add a second terminal building and significantly strengthen the airport's capacity and efficiency.
Upon completion, the developments are expected to enhance the airport's scale, operational performance, service capacity, and long-term growth potential. They will also advance Shenzhen's ambition to build a composite international aviation hub and accelerate the city's transformation into a globally influential economic center and modern international metropolis.
Powered by Shenzhen's robust economic and social vitality, the airport has recorded rapid growth in recent years. In 2024, annual passenger throughput surpassed 60 million for the first time. Growth has continued in 2025, with about 38 million passengers and 1.16 million tons of cargo and mail handled between January and July — both record highs for the same period since the airport's opening.
Located in the northern zone of the airport, the two projects are set to further expand development space, foster industrial clustering, and upgrade supporting infrastructure, injecting fresh momentum into the growth of the local aviation economy.
