Shenzhen’s Luohu District empowers jewelry brands to go global through cross-border e-commerce

A cross-border e-commerce exchange event aimed at boosting the global reach of China’s jewelry industry was held today in Luohu District, Shenzhen. The event brought together leading jewelry designers, manufacturers, trade associations, and digital commerce experts to explore new growth opportunities for the industry.
Co-hosted by the Guangdong Institute of Industrial Innovation and the Luohu Fashion Consumer Promotion Association, and supported by Alibaba International, the event took place in the heart of Shenzhen’s iconic Shuibei Jewelry Zone – one of the world’s largest jewelry manufacturing clusters.
Experts pointed out that while domestic jewelry sales in China are slowing—growing just 3.2% in 2024—the global demand for quality, customizable, and sustainably-made jewelry is rising rapidly. According to projections, the global cross-border jewelry e-commerce market will exceed $145 billion by 2025, with emerging markets such as Southeast Asia and the Middle East showing particular momentum.
Dr. Zhang Congguang, Executive Director of the ESG Research Center at Shenzhen Polytechnic University, emphasized the importance of sustainable development in global branding. “The future of jewelry lies in being beautiful—and sustainable,” he said, introducing a vision of carbon-conscious luxury.
With advanced craftsmanship, agile supply chains, and strong design capabilities, Shenzhen’s Shuibei area is well-positioned to meet global demand. Its jewelry production lead times are approximately 30% faster than the global average, supporting the “small batch, quick turnaround” model critical to cross-border e-commerce.
“The time for going global is now,” said Yan Bingguang, Executive Dean of the Guangdong Institute of Industrial Innovation. “Cross-border trade is no longer a choice for China’s jewelry sector—it’s a necessity.”
To support the transition, the organizers are developing a new collaborative model that connects industry associations, research institutes, and e-commerce platforms. An upcoming white paper on jewelry cross-border trade, to be released later this year, will offer data insights, product strategies, and compliance guidance for businesses seeking to expand internationally.
As China's jewelry industry enters a new chapter, Luohu District aims to become a launchpad for domestic brands aspiring to shine on the global stage.
