Luohu unveils new landmark for a child-friendly city

The newly renovated Luohu Shenzhen-Hong Kong Women and Children Exchange Center—also known as the Luohu Women and Children Tower—is poised to become a vibrant new landmark for cross-border connection and child-friendly development.
As one of the ten demonstration projects in the Luohu Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Business Development Zone, the center symbolizes the deep emotional ties between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, and blends technology, art education, and creative expression into one welcoming public space.
Co-designed by architects from both sides of the border, the project is a testament to the fusion of Shenzhen and Hong Kong's architectural strengths. Led by principal designer Ruan Wentao—a recognized expert on child-friendly urban design in Shenzhen and a prominent figure in Hong Kong's architectural and educational circles—the building reflects a vision of harmony and imagination.
The building draws inspiration from both cities, adopting the poetic concept of "a hundred birds returning to the nest," symbolizing community, unity, and renewal. Its skyline resembles children dancing and singing together, evoking a sense of joy, warmth, and inclusivity. The facade incorporates six color tones from Shenzhen's urban palette and six from Hong Kong, creating a rich, twelve-color exterior that celebrates the vibrancy and connection of the two cities.
A striking feature is the phoenix feathers draped along the outer structure—an architectural metaphor for return, resilience, and transformation. This center is envisioned as a safe resting place, and a launch pad for women and children to spread their wings.
More than just a building, the center offers vital services including legal aid, psychological counseling, and family support. It also hosts a wide range of cultural exchanges, educational programs, and rehabilitation services, fostering talent, encouraging interaction, and nurturing a sense of care and protection. It is designed to help women and children gain confidence, learn new skills, and feel empowered to pursue their futures.
As it continues to evolve, the center will serve as a true community hub—a space for child-friendly engagement and cross-border collaboration. It warmly welcomes residents from both cities to join in, share experiences, and build lasting connections.
