Shenzhen's key expressway expansion set for 2028 completion
The large–scale expansion of the Shenyang–Haikou National Expressway between He'ao and Shenzhen Airport, better known locally as the Jihe Expressway, is advancing rapidly. Scheduled for completion in 2028, the project will significantly strengthen transportation links across the Greater Bay Area.
Current construction efforts focus on bridge substructures, roadbeds, and soft–soil treatment. The upgrade adopts an innovative "ground–level + elevated–level" composite corridor model. Once completed, the expressway will meet a two–level standard featuring 8 lanes in each direction on both levels.
The expanded route will span 41.372 kilometers with a design speed of 100 km/h. A major highlight of the project is the extensive use of industrialized construction technologies, including a new generation of integrated pier–and–beam intelligent installation systems. These methods greatly improve installation efficiency while reducing disruptions to existing traffic and minimizing environmental impact.
"Upon completion, the project will form a 16–lane, three–dimensional composite corridor that will effectively ease traffic pressure on surrounding roads," said Gao Xinlin, Chief Engineer for Contract Section 4 of the Jihe Expressway expansion.
