Shenzhen celebrates fishing season opening with vibrant festivities
The 2025 Dongyu "Fishing Season Opening Day" was held on Aug. 16 at Dongyu Wharf in Shenzhen's Dapeng New District. Nearly 1,000 fishing boats set sail to the sound of sirens, ending the three-and-a-half-month summer moratorium in the South China Sea.
With the first catch landed on Aug. 17, a wide variety of fresh seafood — including fish, shrimp, and crab — is expected to flood local markets. Vendors say prices of common varieties such as golden pompano, mackerel, and lobster will fall by 20 to 40 percent, making them more affordable for consumers.
At Dongyu Wharf, the celebrations featured a blend of cultural traditions and festive activities. Performances included lion dances, fishermen’s songs, and dry-boat rowing, alongside competitions such as a fishing contest. Visitors also enjoyed a bustling seafood and cultural market offering fresh catches, local snacks, and dried seafood products.
The event also introduced exclusive discount coupons for hotels, homestays, and restaurants in the area, providing tourists with a one-stop experience of dining, accommodation, travel, shopping, and entertainment.
