Shenzhen steps up transport capacity as 2026 Spring Festival travel rush begins
The 2026 Spring Festival travel rush officially began on Feb. 2, with Shenzhen expecting around 17 million passenger trips during the period.
According to projections, railways will carry 12.1 million passengers, up 4% year on year, while civil aviation is expected to handle 4.1 million passengers, an increase of 5%. Road transport is forecast to reach 500,000 passengers, down 57%, and water transport is expected to carry 300,000 passengers, up 9%.
Vehicle traffic on the city's expressways is estimated to total 32 million trips, averaging 800,000 per day, up 2% from last year. Passenger flow through Shenzhen–Hong Kong border checkpoints is expected to reach 28 million, with a daily average of 700,000, representing a 7% increase.
To meet peak travel demand, the city has upgraded public transport services. The metro system will extend operations to midnight on key dates before and after the holiday, including Feb. 8–9, 11–14, and Feb. 21–25, while also lengthening last-train connections to major transport hubs and border ports.
Bus services will also be expanded, with 11 feeder bus routes extending service hours and 68 holiday sightseeing lines operating to major tourist attractions. In addition, 200 emergency buses will be on standby in key areas and transport hubs.
The taxi sector will also strengthen capacity. Eleven taxi companies have reserved 1,100 cruising taxis for emergency deployment, while more than 60,000 ride-hailing vehicles will continue normal operations to ensure sufficient transport services around major hubs and stations.
