Cross-border travel between Shenzhen and Hong Kong breaks record
Cross-border travel between Shenzhen and Hong Kong soared on April 18, the first day of a public holiday in Hong Kong, as large numbers of Hong Kong residents traveled north into Shenzhen. According to statistics from the Shenzhen-Hong Kong port authorities, total inbound and outbound travelers through land ports reached 898,300. Of these, 610,000 were inbound, while 288,300 were outbound, setting a new single-day record for inbound traffic.
Compared to the same holiday period last year, inbound figures rose by 5.77% from 576,700, and by 28.45% compared to the first day of the Qingming Festival earlier this year (474,900).
Several land ports hit new single-day records for inbound travelers since 2023. Futian Port processed 157,300 arrivals, Shenzhen Bay Port recorded 112,300, and West Kowloon Station of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed rail saw 83,600 inbound passengers.
Notably, Futian Port welcomed a record-breaking 812 cross-border tour groups on April 18, a 53% increase from the same day last year. This marks the highest single-day number of group entries since the resumption of regular border crossings.
The Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-Speed Rail’s West Kowloon Station handled over 115,000 total travelers on the day, with 83,600 arriving in Shenzhen, setting a single-day record for inbound visitors since its opening. Among these, over 71,000 were Hong Kong and Macao residents, accounting for approximately 85% of total arrivals.
