Luohu leverages national games to boost city vitality and develop 'Intellectual Sports Valley'
After over two months of competition, the chess and card events of the 15th National Games' mass competitions concluded in Luohu District, Shenzhen, with more than 800 athletes and officials participating and 24 gold medals awarded.
On November 6, the General Administration of Sport of China's Chess and Card Sports Center signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Luohu District Government to establish the Luohu Intellectual Sports Center, marking a shift from hosting one-off competitions to cultivating long-term development in intellectual sports.
Luohu has integrated facility upgrades and industry planning to promote the "Intellectual Sports Valley," while using professional events to drive urban development, deepen Shenzhen–Hong Kong integration, and stimulate consumption. The final competition of the bridge event attracted 355 athletes from 60 teams—the largest scale in the event's history.
Technology enhanced the competition experience, with AI chess and Go robots enabling interactive human-machine matches, and awarding ceremonies assisted by intelligent robots, creating a new tech-enabled format.
Media coverage across multiple platforms drew over 6 million online viewers, while on-site viewing areas in key commercial districts attracted more than 30,000 citizens, extending the reach of the games beyond professional circles.
The event also accelerated the urban renewal of the Yinhu area. Roads, lighting, pocket parks, and waterfront walkways were upgraded to create vibrant, walkable spaces suitable for both recreation and competitions.
The Shenzhen Chess Academy (Yinhu), a new professional venue built for the games, serves as the core of Luohu's "Intellectual Sports Valley," combining training, competition, and tech showcases, and enabling high-level matches with advanced broadcasting capabilities.
Through initiatives bringing competitions into commercial districts, schools, and scenic areas, Luohu has made intellectual sports accessible to the public, stimulating local consumption and urban vitality.
Chess and card education programs in schools, along with smart transport solutions such as autonomous buses and improved cross-border connections, further enhance the impact of events and support long-term growth of the intellectual sports ecosystem in the district.
