Luohu unveils the first plan for barrier-free city construction
Barrier-free infrastructural facilities are symbols of a city’s civilization. Luohu unveiled the country’s first plan for the construction of a barrier-free district during its biweekly news conference on Nov. 27.
“Luohu is exploring the idea of building barrier-free facilities in high-density, built-up urban areas,” said Liu Xun, secretary of the leading Party members group of the Luohu Disabled Persons’ Federation.
Liu said that the federation was working with the Luohu district government on drafting the barrier-free city development plan (2020-35) for the district.
The plan involves design standards, a master plan of the city, urban renovation, barrier-free environment construction, a social development plan, an urban space development plan, transportation development, and barrier-free information services.
Luohu aims to have 85% of its area covered by barrier-free infrastructural facilities by 2035.
The Huangbei sub-district office was earmarked to pilot the project.
According to the office, it will first focus on providing barrier-free facilities for local senior residents, particularly people with disabilities.
